From 27 to 29 August 2025, Leipzig University hosted the Summer School Inbetweennesses, a three-day academic gathering dedicated to exploring Afghanistan and its diasporas through critical, postcolonial, and decolonial perspectives.
Guided by the concepts of communication for social change and diaspora communication, the event brought together scholars, activists, and journalists from diverse backgrounds. The program featured workshops, presentations, and group discussions, providing a platform to reflect on the current state of Afghan diaspora communication in Germany.
A central contribution came from Dr. Mariam Popal, who led workshops and shared critical insights into decolonial theories. Alongside her, invited contributors and Leipzig University’s research team presented projects on identity, literature, media, diaspora experiences, oral history, and cultural resistance.
A highlight was the cultural evening on 28 August, featuring poetry, music, and a book spotlight, which added an artistic dimension to the academic exchange.
